The farmer next door to me has a MF 500 & 515 which he wants to sell.
Both are believed to start and run, the 515 is without its header? though.
He's basically asked me to sell them for him, but first of all could someone give me a rough idea of what sort of price I might be able to sell them for. I'd sell them as "spares or repairs". Or if anyone on here may be interested in them, before I stick them on the usual site...
They both look really cracking machines.
I'll get some pics up if anyone wants a look.
Cheers,
W.

Hi Liam - There's a bloke called John Leathers from Riddings in Derbyshire who collects combines. He also makes models of them - Chestnut Miniatures - i'll see if i can find his phone number from the book. Would'nt mind seeing some pics of them. Ian

The engine might be worth a few quid, are they 6.354?
Someone still running one somewhere, though rare now or simply weigh in which would be a shame if they are nice. You could post on the farming forum http://farmingforum.co.uk/forums/index.php

Thanks Ian and Pete!
I've joined that forum, but don't have permission to post in the "Classic Machinery" section of the forum.
I've not managed to get pictures yet, but will update this thread when I do.
Cheers!

Re: Massey Ferguson 500 and 515
500 was the first combine I ever drove.
Remember it well, was a little short at 11 and to press that heavy clutch down had to jump of the seat and wedge myself under the steering wheel and push like crazy!!
Through the years we moved onto bigger and better things, 515, 525... With a cab!! and then i think the last one i sat behind the wheel of was a 740??
Great machines in the day, slow and steady.
A couple of pictures of my grandfather behind the wheel around 1974, 75 ish I think

They certainly did Martin and looking at your name I have a few pics that you may like.
I have some of the same farm where we had a couple of B100's and some photos of it excavating chalk and loading it into an old Bedford QL tipper.... Will ook them out and post them up

Re: Massey Ferguson 500 and 515
Apologies about the delay. Only just managed to get some photos of the combines.
The 500 definitely has a 6.354 engine, but I'm not too sure about the 515 as there aren't any visible numbers on the block (only as per the photo below).
Here is the 500 (1966):

Re: Massey Ferguson 500 and 515
My first combine was a Massey 780 which was replaced by a 500. This combine produced a nice clean sample and wasted very little out the back. However I did not find it coped very well with weedy crops as the returns mechanism was forever blocking up with weed seeds and the cutterbar protested when trying to cut a crop with a lot of grass in it which as it was used for contracting was quite frequent. I swapped this machine for a Class Matador which ran circles around the Massey but did waste a little more corn and not such a good sample. I now have a couple of Class Dominators which are still going strong despite being over 30 years old

Re: Massey Ferguson 500 and 515
Now that brings back memories, the 500 looked the bees knees after the 780 and it did have ample power from that Perkins 6-354. We did not find it a very reliable machine with lots of little niggles most days, then as most of them did it caught fire, the hydraulic valves above the electrics in an enclosure you could not clean out was asking for trouble,
That was replaced with a 515, that combine was a real dog, 6-354 again which we flogged quickly and changed to a NH 8070, at last a reliable machine it may still be working.
We have bought several Perkins 6-354 combine engines for irrigation pumps and generators, they will run for ever at 1500rpm. The two we use now date from 1970 over 40 years old and probably 10000 hrs by now. There are another two crated up at the back of the workshop as replacements if they are ever needed.
