scale model research & help requested

Post #1 by s.e. charles » Thu Nov 16, 2023 11:21 am

really couldn't find a specific place for this request. if this is annoying, please read no further.

i want to build a 1:24 scale air compressor & water pump, both powered x a model A four cylinder engine.

Q: how would the coupling be made from the banger transmission to the two devices?

Q: could there be, perhaps using the factory transmission, a transfer case that would allow power to be used driving one or both pump & compressor.

Q: would the engine be powerful (in the real world) enough to serve both?

the entire assembly will be installed on a reinforced '28 Ford A chassis.

i am only interested in creating a plausible model. if a 1:1 has never been made, there's probably good reason!

thanks

95% of the forum is above my technical understanding, but i'm here for the other 5%

Do you mean a 1929 Ford model A chassis?

yes; bad memory - the chassis is from a Revell 1929 Ford pickup.

as noted in my original post, this is a scale model.

sorry if you thought it to be 1:1 scale.

this isn't me, but it is the truck! good catch.

A set up from the 1950s with the original Ford Thames fitted with a big diesel that drove either or. I doubt the Ford model A would have had sufficient poke for a full size road compressor and a pump.
Out of interest, I wonder when portable air was first used for breakers?

One of the more unusual uses of the Major engine, but a superb one, with plenty of variations around.

Not to sure exactly what your p[roposing but to drve a large air compressor off a T model engine would be a very big ask, I think. What you should explore is the rated HP of the T engine and then what is recommended size HP is needed to operate it at its best.
Optional engine if space is an issue is as suggested above some of the en gines not only used in Fordson Major tractors but so many other vehicle is the P3 Perkins diesel engines. So many variants around with various HP outputs to choose from.
As for s coupling our local bearing shop has all sorts of couplings to choose from. They maybe a direct coupling or an air operated one and anything in between b ut prices will be up there. Some old stationary engines when driving different stuff use the old fashion dog or cone clutch which is another option to look into and confirm what it is rated to do.
Good luck with your project and look forward to any diagrams or progress on this.

I would recommend a Major, a model T is not very powerful and difficult to operate. The std clutch will be fine, and then the connection is easier with the input shaft (which you'll have to make). It also allows for easier starting.
