Absolutely staggering the number of Fordson conversions/skids that were used in the 30s through to the early 60s when things suddenly moved on very rapidly. I supposed the price of the robust skid and access to parts and dealerships was paramount.

I think the performance of the Major was also pivotal. Being an instant starter in real cold is a very good attribute. I still discover new conversions every so often, and they really do do everything. A favourite one I think of is that you could run an airport entirely powered by Major's! No need to invent new conversions as they're all there already, and with a good choice of individual engines only one lot of spares is needed for the whole fleet!
