I had a PTS DP refresher course last week.These qualifications enamble me to carry out my duties in a safe manner.
You may find this video interesting as it gives an insight to what we have to contend with on a daily basis.
WARNING second video contains bad language and it is pretty hard hitting.
I work alone nearly all the time,maybe its better because there are no other distractions and you have to be 100% on the ball.
I have been up front on a train and saw a near miss,part of my job is to inspect trains after fatalities.Thankfully I have only been to two.
But that screwed me up for a few weeks.

hello martyn.
very serious videos,only shows what can happen when you are distracted ,it,s uncanny but even the direction of the wind can reduce the noise of a train.again a stark reminder of using those mobile phones when concentration is paramount.

I seen these videos when I did my PTS, scary stuff. Why were the two guy walking in the 4 foot in the platform.

They thought there was a full block on that line. I go to about five instances a week. I get nervious even if I am told by the signaller the line has been blocked. Because of staff cutbacks I don't even see a MOM on jobs these days. Its just me and the mobile phone.My own route knowledge.I always look out for a place to run.If no place, you are instructed to get down low on the ballast and not in the four foot.
I can tell you its pretty scary at night. Been in the Severn tunnel five times on call outs. A brown trouser job for sure

In BR days ,mobile phones were not used as much as they are now.There were more signal boxes When we contacted the signal box we had to use the phone AT the signal if possible or the NRN radio telephone on the loco.The signaller would know where you are.But,these days nearly all communication is by mobile,there is a risk that you may make a mistake on where you actually are, as the signaller takes your word for it on the location you are phoning from. This along with the lack of an on site mobile operations manager (MOM ) The risks are increased.
I have been sent to jobs that have been six miles away from the actual breakdown.I tend to contact the driver direct first to get location, then the signaller that is controlling that stretch of line before proceding on site,then block the line if required before walking to the breakedown.You are under pressure to get it done quick as the penalties for delays are high. But I don't bow to pressures,just make sure that I, and any other people are safe first.
Privitisation has not made the rail industry safer,its all cost these days.

Seen quite a few of those NR videos on YouTube. Very hard hitting. Does these sorts of accidents happen often?
