Hi Andy, I've got the same problem but with my 1976 3C II. Some numbers on the front n/s cross member casting but nothing resembleing a serial number according to the manual I downloaded from this site. However, today I took the panel off the front loader single control stick in the cab to change an O ring and saw 2 more sets of numbers on the casting. Not that yours will be the same set up but someone on here will know for sure.

hi Andy,
the serial plate should be on the beam below the front loader, behind the front wheel on the road side of the machine.
Thats where it is on mine. Yours could be painted over??
If you have a number plate, you could apply to the DVA for a lost/replacment V5(tax/log)book by phoning them, because the form you need isn't available for download (V55/c I think it is) at a cost of only £25, you might have to show insurance or SORN if not going to be on the public road.
The V5 will have the serial number(VIN)
hope this helps
John
