JCB 1400B won't go into gear

Hello, first time poster here.

I recently purchased a 1400B backhoe Serial # 14BT4010/354316/7. I knew it had a small hydraulic leak in the excavator manifold which didn't concern me much. When we brought it over to my house it started and drove just fine off of the trailer and a little around my property till I parked it. Afterword's a few friends stopped by and looked over my new toy. At some point I believe someone must have moved the 4 speed shifter out of gear because now it just moves freely in any direction. when I unloaded it off of the trailer I never touched it gear shifter just the shuttle shifter and just assumed it was in low gear. It was parked on a slight incline and when you put the shuttle shifter on the column into forward or reverse it would lurch in each direction but not move more than a foot or two. I towed it with my pickup truck onto the flat driveway and then it would move under its own power but very sluggishly. I'm guessing the 4 speed gear box is out of gear and the hydrostatic part has just enough friction for it to do this. Has anyone else had a problem like this? I have had much smaller tractors in the past but this is quite new to me so any info on this unit would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Just to clarify, you think the gear leaver is just moving freely without shifting any of the gears, and probably in neutral?

Yes sir, the shifter moves in all directions and does not feel like it goes into any gear with the engine running or not. I am assuming it is a standard "H" pattern shift? The diagram on the knob is worn off. I did pull the boot up from the floor around the shifter to look at the linkage and that all looks correct as in it's still all connected. I am thinking the next step is to get underneath it and pull the cover off where the linkage goes into the top of the transmission and see if possibly its disconnected in there? Unless anyone else has a better idea?

Thank you.

Is that an electric shuttle or manual lever shuttle?

That'll be known to us in the UK as a project 7 grey cab with Synchro shuttle and electric f/r.
If the box is in neutral, there would be no wheel movement at all when the shuttle lever is engaged. The shuttle part of the transmission has a torque converter rather than being hydrostatic. Have you dipped the oil level in the transmission? (Perhaps you already know or maybe not but the tranny oil is totally seperate from the hydraulic oil in these, and uses an automatic transmission fluid(ATF).

And checked when the engine is running.

No pete. Engine stopped for dippage on the Synchroshuttle box.

Thanks for correcting me Agrimax. A little knowledge worse than none at all. I hope I have been checking my Manitou based NH correctly.
