1984 JCB 3CX machine. Fuel guage shows plenty of diesel. Not happened before when being used. Anybody any ideas ?

Does it turn over at all? Any lights on dash when ignition is on?

May sound daft, but are you sure the gauge works?

I had a load of fun with my machine a year or so back when it ran low on fuel, and despite relatively fresh filters a load of crap got into the injector pump internal filter and clogged it all up.

Had a similar game with our MF65 tractor a month back!

Discussed cleaning the injector pump internal filter here: '87 3CX Perking 4.236 Injector Pump Problem

May sound daft but check there are no hydraulic valves or levers stuck in or on, I had it with my 370c, the swing lock hydraulic lever was stuck on and it would not start and gave all the symptoms of being out of diesel, is there smoke coming out of the exhaust?

Thanks for all replies. However, as the hydraulics may have been overloaded at time is there not some sort of solenoid protection system , which resets with time. Have left the machine until tomorrow for another attempt.

Not that I'm aware of.
The easy way to release the hydraulic pressure when the engine is not running is just to waggle every control lever. If there is any pressure, you'll hear it through the valves.

My 3c11 does this sometimes not often but it does stall on occasion particularly under heavy load such as a full bucket of clay . It will then refuse to even turn over . My solution is to move the levers to let off hydraulic pressure then get a bar into the pump drive at the front of the engine and turn the engine over a couple of times . Hey presto it always starts straight back up . Not a high tech solution but works for me .

Thanks for that Chris. When it happened the bucket was full of soil, but it does turn over. Did you move all levers or just the bucket control levers ?

Is it turning over at normal cranking speed?
