Also sprayed some easystart in air filter, machine started and died which suggests all is good apart from diesel flow. Which once again goes back to Cav dpa diesel pump problem ?

There is a small filter on the dpa pump after the inlet, just make sure you keep all the bits in the correct order!

In the thread I linked to earlier there are photos of the offending filter that I had much fun in extracting and cleaning

Thanks for the above. I have taken off the back plate of the CAV dpa injector pump as advised and the filter is very clean. Any further ideas ?

Have you checked the cam shaft driven mechanical lift pump on the opposite side of the engine to the injector pump?

No, but the lift pump looks new and I believe it was put on prior to purchase last year.

Have you tried cranking the engine with the pump bleed screw open? If you get a good stream of fuel that should eliminate the lift pump. First thing I would check is the metering valve in the top of the pump, that it hasn't broken or the spring come off. It's common for the metering valve to stick but this normally happens after the engine is stopped and left with the stopper out. If you look on youtube for Bundy Bears Shed he does a good video on stripping cav pumps (you don't need to remove the pump to check the metering valve), It will be far better for you to see what's involved rather than me trying to explain it. Seems that pump problems are getting more common with modern diesel containing less sulphur and having less lubricating properties, alot of people are adding ATF to the diesel to help lube the pump

I'm sure you are right, and speaking of which if i do start putting ATF in my tanks I better make sure it's not red, I may get accused of running the wrong diesel!
