Sinking Ships Crew saved by Telescopic Crane

Post #1 by XS650 » Tue Nov 25, 2008 12:30 pm

The bulk carrier Fedra ran agound under cliffs in Gibraltar ,5 of the crew were airlifted off by helicopter which then broke down due to sea spray ,the ramaing 25 were lifted over the cliff in a cradle by the crane in the picture belinging to local firm Eurogruas, this must have been some operation at night in the worst weather for decades to hit Gib.

Hi Craig, they are superb pictures. Looks like the superstructure has completely broken away from the rest of the ship. what a mess. Great work by the crane driver !

It was in ballast ,hard to find full details about the rescue ,i was amazed when i read they were pulled off with a crane. The Spanish rescue helicopter had a very close call when sea water ingested into engine set it on fire ,they landed on cliff top.

Imagine if this had happened in Cornwall the crane driver and all the rescuers would never be off the tv ,big gongs all round etc etc. and we are supposed to be a self effacing race.
