Re: Expensive break.....
The rod end has snapped off which carries the seals hasn't it? and is still in cylinder? I suppose taking the end cap off will show if the cylinder has been damaged or scored by the rod. I would imagine this is going to be expensive especially being on this size machine.

Cracking pics Stu (no pun intended )
Looks like they are loading Hi-cube bodys and the Cylinders are going to full stroke every load ..
Same happened up at Teck .. The would ride the loader arms up the bodys to get the extra hight and then full tilt dump ..
In the end they had to Replace the 992 with a 994F ...

Bit hard to tell, but it looks like a fairly clean break, no sign of fatigue.

Re: Expensive break.....
It looks like there is a crack propagating down the shaft. If the break was right at the end where, presumably the 'piston' is welded onto the shaft ? maybe there was a weakness in the weld which finally gave way under extreme load conditions.
Re: Expensive break.....
It's wired how it cracked, obviously it was part way through bending and being hardened chrome moly I would think are they, it wouldn't just bend but snapped and stress cracked at the same time. It's a bit of a croked break to, things like that normally snap pretty straight.

If the rams are going to full stroke should there not be bucket stops to eliminate the rams bottoming out?

Aye well it was always the Hoist cylinders that broke ..
I would assume it has bucket stops ?? Never worked on these Mono-Boom Junk ..
