Gavin Phillips wrote:Is it possible that the arrival of the RH200 sealed the fate of the RH300? If I recall correctly, the second RH300 machine built (an electric version) had a 34 yard bucket which is the same as that of the standard RH200 shovel (barring the pilot machine which featured a 27yd unit, ending up at Stobswood opencast site).

Jeremy Rowland wrote:I believe that there were three machines made; the second RH300 as you say was an electric powered shovel that was put to work in Chile, the third machine was never sold but used as parts for the other two machines. The RH200 was based on the knowledge that O&K had built up and learned from production of the RH300.

Gavin Phillips wrote:One of the Eric Orlemann books in my collection confirms that the third RH300 (no details given if this machine is a diesel or electric version) was used as a donor vehicle. Thanks for confirming where the electric RH300 was put to work, for some reason I kept thinking it was in Alberta...

Hi Guys,

I know I'm dragging up an older thread, but I was hoping I could clarify a couple things and shed some light on the confusion.

The first machine was the NSM machine, as we all know. It was built with the 27yd bucket, and was factory painted in NSM colours.

The second machine was the same as the NSM machine, but was painted fully in red. It was the machine shown at the 1980 Bauma show, and also had the same 27yd bucket as the NSM machine. This was the machine that was shipped back to the factory, and later used for parts for the other two machines.

The third machine was the electric machine with the high cab, that went to Chile. This was the machine that came with the 34yd bucket.

Hope this is helpful in clearing up any confusion on the matter.

Brian

Many thanks for the clarification Brian, certainly appreciated.

Is there any chance that the electric RH300 still survives?
Look out that window, Eden isn't burning. Its burnt.

It is interesting when you look at the shape of the RH300 bucket. It was really, really wide whereas more modern buckets seem deeper and narrower. I guess as the power and efficiency has increased the force on the highwall can be increased with a narrower bucket lip.

This thread has got me thinking about the RH300 again - it was a real monster in the flesh and pictures don't really do it justice.

Godkin had a lot of interesting kit at one point (albeit not all operating when the drags were parked) - RH300, couple of rH120's, RH90, few RH75s (may have left prior to the 120'c), Demag 241, Wabco 170s' (which were crazy big at the time), Cat 785's, massive amount of 3311's, O&K G350 grader, Komatsu 375 dozer, W700 draglines etc.

Gavin, I'd like to think it's still there in a boneyard somewhere. But the reality is, it was parked up around 25 years ago, so the odds are not in our favour. I wouldn't rule it out however, anything is possible.

If anybody has any pictures of the electric machine, I'd love to see them. I've only ever seen the one picture in one of Eric's books.

Dah, I have always been intrigued by how wide the RH300 bucket was. Truly bizarre by todays standards.

Brian
