motor grader project

Post #1 by Baloo » Wed Aug 27, 2025 5:47 pm

would anyone want to discuss the feasibility of building a half scale motor grader ?
motor graders have fascinated me for a good while would love something like a cat 140m or a JD 670, ive spent ages watching various channels on youtube such as this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7n-gHHA7OY but there are dozens of others so much to learn about them,
some are 6x4 a few 6x6, some are artic steer plus front wheel steer some just front wheel steer etc etc, i dont have room to use a full size one and even if i did i doubt i could afford it unless someone was giving one away lol now if it 2m or 7ft wide or so i could used it round my wood, a real one has the ability to rip and gouge rocks out all i have is top soil to level out and loose clay that i have dug out of the pond, most folk will say save your time and buy something like a dozer but thats not a project thats shopping :wtf: i have always built things from scratch 75% of the fun is building it if its useful afterwards great if not well i had fun building it ,
so i was thinking of just driving the back 4 wheels having pivot steer and front steer cant see the need for wheel tilt at the front , dont need a ripper on the rear but may add a rukus rake instead and i dont need the molding board to go almost vertical like they do in the vids, if i could lift it 18" at each end and rotate it that would be fine
so first question is how much grunt does it need given im only pushing loose soil thats been tipped out of a dumper,, depends a lot on gearing i guess but i was thinking along the lines of a landrover 300tdi or p38 diesel engine with auto box then through a 3.3 to 1 transfer box then into some 5 to 1 axles that i have out of a jcb 1cx ( i think ) that i have
does any of that make sense ??

Hi Andy; I know where there is a full size motor grader that may just be for sale, from memory it's an Aveling machine, if you are interested then let me know and I'll get some photos and details for you.

You could always get a Major powered one! They did exist, and are considerably longer than a std tractor. I think there are pics of at least one on the forum, can't remember who made them, though, Aveling could be in there on it.

Same place as my machines, Beverley near Hull, I can get some photos of it next time I'm up there, I think it's a former MOD machine, I don't think the asking will be over the top.

that first one is more or less what i had in mind but would need to be 6 wheels to make it look right, and probably with out a cab as if the cab is big enough to sit in it will destroy the scale i would like it to be half scale through out

i have loads of these wheels and tyres that im using on my tractor build they work out out about right for half scale

The first of those Major graders has a GM governor, not what you expect at all. Probably a replacement engine. The other one is an Aveling Barford, and is on a Power Major; the one I know better. Not so familiar with the first one, don't know who made that.
