Caterpillar d10 84w whereabouts and questions

Post #1 by komatsu d475-1 » Tue Jan 13, 2009 12:41 am

Hi all,
Does anyone know where this tractor is?
Before the deal was done for the 475 me and my aul fella went to an old open cast site somewhere near glasgow to look at a d10 that was advertised thru Leah international plant sales. Before we left home we had copies of reciepts for 130000 pounds spent on this so expectations were high.the service history for 18 months was included.First bad sign was that she was sitting ticking over when we arrived at the yard .She had been regrousered but the pads were thin and wouldnt have done long in rock.I pushed back clay to the tip head for over an hour [no shortage of power] but hard nose was moving back and forward about 1.5 inches and rubbing an oil cooler which was new .
The engine was breathing real heavy and exhaust smoke coming out everywhere so decided to giv it a miss as she was to far gone to put right .
Apparently this tractor came from japan thru All plant sales .
Next she apeared for sale at Chepstow plant [i think thats the name]and then i think that this was the tractor now painted that was in either cpm or earthmovers[to be featured in a later edition which i dont think happened]Could someone clarify which mag.
Then she appeared again JGE commercials in Bedfordshire for sale .
Wonder if anyone has any photos or info on this as it would bre greatly appreciated. She had a three shanked ripper with only one shank.
question for cat lads.
1 All d 10s dont have twin stacks so are single stack machines 84w series?
2Did cat ever make a d10L or arethey rebadged d10s

D10, D10N, D10R early were single stack, later R & T went to twin stack.

The original D10 became the DllN, The D9L became the D10N, 8L to the 9N etc. so there was never a D10L.

Think this D10 you are chasing ended up out in Africa? A local welder made a skin for the blade a couple of months ago, if it is the same dozer.

Hi Stuart, thanks for that, also found out that there was also a d10 with the serial 76x which was narrower than the 84w series . 76x 106 inches,
84w 114 inches,
The twin stacks arrived in 1980 from serial 610 onwards and a stronger bevel gear case in 1981 from serial 720[all useless info i know but interesting to me]
Discovered that the d 10 that i looked at was near Shotts close to the m8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh[landfill possibly old opencast. There was also a RH30 here as well.does anyone know of this site?

Martyn,I had a spell(a few hours!) pushing scrapers with RJ Levack's 84W single stack D10.It was ex Thompsons of Prudoe and a 1979 model I think. Here's me sat in the blade in 1991

Hi Mervyn,I don't know what happened to the pic I posted?? :dizzy: :dizzy: .
As for the performance of it.....Well,the biggest tractor I had driven at the time was a D9G so climbing on a D10 was something awesom. It was engaged in pushloading Cat 631C and 637 scrapers.Out of curiosity I pushed the first few in 2nd gear and finished them off in 3rd...easily but settled down to 2nd gear only as there is simply no need to run any tractor in 3rd gear. Both doors were open and the cloud of blacksmoke would put Bagdad to shame! The V12 was lovely.Downsides of pushing scrapers with a dozer of this size were bowl floors peeling back. You just can't feel any resistance and rather than the tracks spin the floor peels up instead. :( .D10 L series tractors should stick to ripping or pushing big 657 scrapers really.

Hi Nicky,
Ur comments refering to black smoke sure sums up what i found as well, the one i tried put an unreal amount of black smoke out when u lifted ur foot of the decelerator but ran fairly clean when working at a steady rev and the engine absolutely just purred.475 puts out a bit of smoke but not nearly as much and while the v8 engine runs nice it does sound a bit harsh and heavier.ps The 8 is lookin well at work
