Demag H185

Post #1 by tim » Wed Oct 22, 2008 9:18 pm

This Demag H185 was bought by Brown and Mason Demolition to help demolish redundant power stations. The pulveriser/muncher attachment was made specially for the machine by Allied and was said to weigh around 15 tons. Tim

Now that is a decent sized piece of kit to have on site
Must be the only mining type hydraulic excavator of this size used in such a way :?:

Nice pic Tim

The boom of that 185 ended up with Scottish Coal as a spare. Not sure if the base machine also came with it? There has been a few companies using mining class excavators for demolition over the years. I think one of the most impressive ones was the Belgium company De Paepe (now part of Shanks Waste) using a Liebherr R994 excavator with a boom mounted La Bounty MSD 142 Shear.....the shear weighed 28tonnes alone! They also used it as a backhoe for ripping out foundations and sub level concrete structures. Again....similar to Brown & Mason's it was power station dismantling work which allowed such a large machine to be used economically.

Was the 1450 a track shovel Martyn?. B&M are certainly big contractors these days and have some heavy duty machines-mostly Komatsu i believe. Here is one of their PC750 Super Long Reach machines at full stretch(135ft) demolishing 6 cement silos at the Blue Circle cement works at Plymouth in the summer of 2000  Tim

Yes Tim the 1450B was a track shovel ..at the time Brown and Mason were branching out into power station demolition .. Alf Brown had just retired and Terry Brown had just taken over and had big plans ..they used to have a shack more or less, down in Sandwich in Kent next door to KCC landfill site .. my first job with them was in Fulham Gas works ..made famous for the sweeney car chases .. but they had just been awarded their first power station demolition up in Lincolnshire.
I was with them for 2 years but the traveling up to London everyday was too much for me .. it was in them days, 5 hours traveling and 8 hours work, in battered old MK1 transit crew buses if you was lucky.
They still have a yard at Broadstairs, i shall womble down there soon with me camera ..if i get time.

There was a Liebherr 994 that was fitted with a LaBounty Dipper shear years ago.
