Tell me why?

Can anyone answer me why you would alter the exhaust system on a dozer like this? I know the earlier IHC TD series had bad cooling problems and cracked heads like nothing, but would this cure the problem, Yuk!! Its a TD-18 I snapped in Gisbourne East Coast , NZ back in 1994. Owned by an outfit calle...

An earlier era.

When I see the photos of the equipment used in places like the Tar Oil fields etc it makes me think back to my days in the industry. This was big gear when I was doing my apprentiship. A 38 RB navvy loading an IHC AR190 6x4 dump truck. That seam of coal is solid with no partings, Used for power gene...

Dragline woes.

I never really had my camera with me during my working days but managed to get a driver to take this shot of us at work!! On a mine-site where I was doing my apprentiship, a NCK 304 dragline had slipped off the pads and was bogged down. We were trying to get it back onto them again with the help of ...

WW11 relics.

Found these three ex WW11 relics in a yard some 12 lm from where I lived in the Bay of Plenty, North Island, New Zealand. All were ex WW11, the D8-8R? still had the army green paint under the yellow. The scraper was 1940s era and the truck was a 1940s 2 1/2 ton 6x6 GMC. All were examples of very pop...

Left to rust away quietly!!

Found this D8 8R? & Let scraper at a private coal mine in New Zealand in 1993. Although its hard to see, the dozer has pulled the front axle off the scraper so they just left it where it stopped. It had been there for a few years then and I bet it is still there. Mine was owned and run by a coup...

Turner tractor loader in quarry, 1955.

My dad working the loader he had built onto a Turner diesel tractor in New Zealand in 1953. Not a very successful unit, replaced later by a IHC TD9 crawler loader.

Hewco scraper working.

Hope these come out OK. They show the scraper at work on a land development for a new housing estate. One shot shows the push plate on the back of the scraper. A D4 7U assisted in loading on some occasions.

Re: Mitsubishi on real boggy ground in NZ.

Hi All, Yes I agree, the tandem wheels would/could have a negative effect on the axles/bearings etc. It may well have been a short term arrangement just for this particular contract, not really to sure. I have seen first hand the problems associated with fitting 2 or 3 extra wheels to farm tractors ...

Re: What is it?

Morning all, Lars, your pretty close, they did use Fordson tractor power units, but thats all that is Ford. The rest is locally built. It is a New Zealand manufactured twin powered 6 yd motor-scraper. Approx 20 were built, the bulk in NZ and a couple in Australia. I believe that only one is still co...
