The previous owner had taken the cylinder head off (9 months ago), thought the problem is "un axe de piston qui a du jeu", my youngest daughter said "the piston wants to play" but the jury concluded (roughly translates to) "the piston pin has a lot of play". I think that a/several Gudgeon pin is loose/circlip problem. Other things as well I expect.
Well I intend to try and replace the damaged/worn parts in the existing engine (with my very limited knowledge and equipment), expect me back on the forum on a regular basis for help and information (updates), when my day job allows.

can any body tell me if the rocker assembly and push rods are they the same for the Leyland 38td and 49/ NT engines

Jeux in this is definitely play. Where in france are you? Assuming not canada or belgium etc that is.
