1961 Huber Warco Motor Grader - How to change tires?

I own a 1961 Huber Warco 10G Motorgrader - I need to know if there is a trick to getting the tires off?

I have tried with a 4-ton press but no luck. They have 8 wedge lugs on the outer rim.

Hi Ricky welcome to CMN it would be helpful if you could post some detailed pictures of the tyres on the rim.
Are the rims split of not?

Be carefull when dealing with tyres on machinery,I have seen first hand when one blows off the rim.I would seek advise from a tyre specialist on your type of machine before you proceed.

Back off each lug nut part way and hit the wedge with a hammer.The wedge will pop loose but the lug nut will hold it from flying out and hurting someone.Do each one as neccessary to contain them as you remove the wheel.Ron G

Thanks for your responses - I can get the nuts & wedges off but the rim will not come off of the hub - it is either rusted on or there is something else holding it. Before I put anymore pressure and break something I want to be sure how this wheel comes off.

We did put a 4-ton jack behind the rim and put lots of pressure on it but nothing moved at all.

I would spray penetrating oil on the contact points and hit it from behind with a large hammer,first one side then the other.It should pop loose before too long.If you force one side it will wedge itself tighter and tighter,it has to be just about square to be free to move.Ron G

Hi Ricky,

I am about to make some assumptions here so please bear with me, I assume that you want to remove the complete rim and tyre from the machine?
I had initially thought that you wanted to split the rim to remove the tyre from the rim?
It would appear that you are correct that it is rusted on, whilst I have never taken a wheel of this type off before I can tell you that the spigot mounted wheels on some of the trucks that I have worked on did used to rust on solid.
I agree with Ron the best way to remove the wheel is with a good dousing of penetrating oil then hit the rim preferably each side in turn or get help and use two decent hammers and hit the rim in unison.
I would strongly advise against using any heat as this is dangerous.

Thanks for your responses - I just wanted to make sure there was nothing else apparently holding onto the rim from the hub before I tried to remove it with force - this is a long term project so I will keep you updated.
