Volvo 860??

Post #1 by Hammer man » Sat Oct 03, 2009 7:10 pm

Heres 1 of our Volvo fuel tankers.Mid 1970`s i think,860???We have 2 of these.I`m not sure if they are converted dumpers or purpose built as tankers.I know early last year they removed the dumpbody off an early A25D & sent it away for conversion.I have driven this tanker on a huge site we used to work on in Portishead. It was more confortable on site than the A20 & A35C i was on at the time!It has a steering columb gear change. The only trouble was its only 6x4,so had to watch we did`nt get it stuck

Although a lot of conversions were made from ageing dumpers the Volvos were available as a 'Terain Chassis' without the dump body, they were then numbered 860TC, 861TC etc.

These were used in the UK for refuse container handling, tankers, pipeline shot-blast and welding units, timber transporters (the Forestry Commision had them in Norfolk), and as the basis for concrete mixers.

Thanks Dave s :) I`ve been on a few land fill sites & have seen 6x6 A25`S with hook loaders on them,& also 4x4 & 6x6 unbodied Volvo`s & bell`s with 5th wheels to transport the artic tipping trailers on to the tips.
I will try to find out if ours were dumpers or unbodied :)

i think the machine in the top pic was converted to a tanker , i drove it once on fuel duties back in 87 during the construction of A303 ilminster bypass, my main drive was a 5350 till a new E reg A20 came along :D could never get the hang of those 861's although kelston was still running some real dog eared 860's as well
