I have seen some photo's of big lifts off ships using the ships cranes 100 ton or more and the lean the ships get on is amazing I would think the ships would be pumping water in the opposite side of the ship to counter balance to me it wouldnt take much for it all to go pear shaped but I really have no idea

There was a programme in the Mighty Ships TV series that showed a heavy lift vessel unloading a huge piece of kit for an oil refinery and that vessel had had additional tanks outside the main hull that were filled with water to balance the load as the two on board cranes swung it out over the dock and onto a multi axle trailer or SPMT.
