Frankipile

Post #1 by canaldrifter » Thu Jan 05, 2012 5:22 pm

In the late 70s and early 80s I drove for Frankipile out of their yard near St Albans. I have uploaded some slide shots I took then. I also have some prints which I will add when I've scanned 'em in.

A slideshow can be viewed here. You can adjust the speed:

Some old Foden and Scammel eight-leggers were used on the original construction of the Hatfield A1 tunnel. They were supposed to be street legal, as we had to use part of the A1 as a haul road, but they weren't! I can remember forgetting (is that a double negative?) to switch off the diff lock on a Scammel. It was OK until I got to the A414 roundabout when there was a big bang, the back axle split open, spilling all its oil on to the road, and the double rear wheels started to come off! I have photos somewhere. I'll scan 'em in one day.

Incidentally, when they finished the tunnel, and before they opened it they held a fair inside, with racing along the northbound side, and stalls on the southbound. Even now, driving through there, I can truthfully say of the middle of the southbound tunnel, 'I morris danced just here!'

I can also state that I lost my cherry in the middle of the M1 going past Garston, but that was before the motorway was built when that spot was known as 'The Cow Field'. It contained many old small grassy-banked quarry pits, ideal for a quiet teenage trist..... but I digress.

Thats interesting BigKit he was fairly big in the mid 70's to early 80's around East Grinstead he had a lot of old Fodens some ended up in bits on one building site, then a company called Hillcrest appeared they had old Maggi Deutz 8 leggers when they dissapeared it was Browns with 8 legger Scammells who are still pretty big around here, there is'nt the muckshifting like there used to be when i was a lad and East Gristead was being over developed i wish i had taken pictures then!!
