Hi,
The tipping gear was pretty reliable and breakdown free. The carts were pivoted over the axle (ballanced), and if loaded evenly it was just pull the pin and a nudge from the hossler or a jerk from the horse and up it went.
When I was a boy (1940's) the local authority used horses and carts like these for allmost everything, hardly a lorry to be seen and not really that long ago.
I remember watching one loaded with two buckets from a rope operated Chaseside.
