Its based on a D8T powertrain, few differences to track frame and chassis.

Thank you Kas, very interesting shots... The '8' of the 583 denotes the model, usually, although the 571 was a four cylinder machine and the 572 was a six, go figure. The newer direct start 583's were rated at 50 ton, I remember driving a brand new one in Scotland for Turriff and LLoyds testing (I think) came out on site to calibrate it or some such thing, they had a 50 ton test weight and I had to lift it - initially no chance, first the clutch slipped and I had to dog that up, then when it was a couple of feet in the air I had to hold it, the hoist brake wouldn't hold so I had to dog that up as well, eventually it would lift the and hold the 50 ton load (the boom was up against the back stops, springs metal bound) and then they tested it at various radius es with reduced weights and then gave it a clean bill of health. By the time they departed the machine was virtually undrivable, neither the hook or the boom would free fall and it required super human strength to get the clutch to toggle - it was hours before I got it back to how I liked it! I would imagine that the one you photographed would be a hydra boom as they were coming in when I last worked on a pipeline. Press had a dose of 22A's hydra booms, they also had a dose of BTD 20's but they had cross dog Boughton draw works!
