Great pictures, Geraint. Pity about getting your car stuck.
Trenchers have come on a bit since the one we used to use in West Yorkshire.
It was an Allen of Oxford machine based around a Fordson Supermajor skid unit.
The digging part was a rotating wheel with buckets rather than a chain.
Wondering if anyone has any pictures of such a machine ?

Great pictures Geraint!

Was the gravel cart a Mastenbroek too?

John - as a teenager I worked on a Allen 'Landrainer' with a very early Ford 5000 skid unit and a bucket wheel. The wheel had a tendency to come off its guides and was a bit of a bu**er to get back on!

The drive from the 5000 skid unit to the Allen tracks was by open chains, and in bad conditions (which they nearly always were) we had a set of bolt-on grousers that were fitted to the tracks as required.

There were two operating positions - from a seat up by the wheel, or from standing on the plate over one track.

To move between jobs the owner would remove the grousers and drive it on the road while standing on the side plate!! It was a frightening sight on narrow roads, and it wasn't slow for a tracked machine when in top gear!

No the gravel cart is a custom job, it's based on a Yamnar tracked dumper, and has had a hopper put on it. Mastenbroek want £110,000 for thair gravel cart so my boss told them where they could go. The only problem with the cart is that it had rubber tracks and they have been replaced by metal ones and it keeps jumping her tracks.

Very smart. I was lucky to spend a few hours on an old Mastenbroek but for laying water main so no expert driving needed.

The main difference is the cab position. On the one I used it was alongside the shoe on an independant lift and by eck it was noisy.
Deutz engine, hydro tracks and some kind of auto box/ torque convertor for driving the chain.
