no idea what the machine is but the lady doesnt look overly impressed by it all not lot has changed when dating girls from back in 1946

I thought that too, but then I think all the Smiths from the 1940s/50s were left hookers, ( had the cabs on the left hand side), certainly the ones I worked on did.
The machine in the pic has the cab on the right.
Is that a generator housing for a scrap magnet behind the lady??

thanks for the replies, very interesting, any way it could be a koehring, these are mentioned in the war diaries of the period along with lima, osgood 200 and rb 10 and 19!!!

Hi,
I checked through some old stuff I have and there's no doubt your right the excavator is like the Koehring Illustrated in the advert below. I think it's the forerunner of the 304 model.

Koehring or NCK 304 - the box on the front left side is an auxiliary generator house for lighting power. Probably had an Onan or ACDelco petrol generator lurking inside.
There is an NCK 304 and a Pentland crane at Threlkeld Mining Museum.
