Taylor Yardster Fork LIft Y-16W - transmission slipping

Post #1 by WadeC » Sun Sep 29, 2013 3:46 pm

Just wanted to touch base as a preliminary effort. I have a 1959 Yardster Y-16W fork lift with an Allison CRT 3331-1 transmission. It seems to be slipping quite badly. You can get it to move a little, but it slips enough that it doesnt have the power to even pull itself up on a trailer.

I have been searching for manuals for it for weeks, so that I can understand how it operates to help narrow in on diagnosing it, but have not found any manuals yet. Planning a full fluid/filter service once I can find the necessary filters and figure out what kind of oil I should use to replace it. (Have seen two different oils supposed to be for it C-4 15w40 or C-2 oil... which appears is either 15w40 motor oil with a C-4 rating, or I guess from what I can tell, C-2 is a dextron/mercon ATF fluid. SO not really sure what to put in there, and dont want to drain til I know what to replace it with.

Anyway, if someone knows those types of transmissions, I have open ears for suggestions on things to check or any ideas on things to try to help diagnose it.

Thanks
Wade

As for a manual I did a bit of looking and finally found a spec sheet.

http://www.copelandintl.com/category/copetagadelic/crt3331-1

Which lists a four page pdf at the bottom

Thanks!

Yeah I had found that... but am not sure I understand what C-2 oil is...

Best I can tell, it carries some of the same approvals as JD HYGuard... but also found places where they say Dextron/Mercon also may have the C-2 classification. So... my lack of knowledge with Hyd oils is what is getting me so far.

DId find a manual for the trans on this site... YAY!
Allison Powershift Transmission 3321-/3331-series service manual

But it too talks only about C-2
So trying to figure out what I should go looking for. So far, I have not been impressed with the auto parts places here, apparently, if its not in the computer, it doesnt exist... so not quite ready to drive into town without knowing what Im looking for.

Thanks a bunch!
Wade

Nor I, oil specs seem too damn hard.

Actually the absence of the viscosity specs bothered me the most. An oil specialist "should" know, but it isn't always the case - they might just be an oil reseller. :shifty:

I do wonder why it so hard for machine manufactures to publish a list of oils they'd like to see in their machine, rather than being secretive and only pointing to their banded oil.

Moving off topic about oil specs and oil resellers having a clue - in my locality, Qld, Australia, we had a couple of notable branded oils being recommended for all sorts of things engine and transmission wise, even by the oil companies advertising. A savvy oil disturber I met, put me on the right path after many $$$$ down the drain and solving a mystery why so many older International tractors with a torque amplifier around the area and state started to slip in high range and gradually got worse beginning to slip in lower gears. The "inter" guys sold an oil product for these older types, which most notably on the drum was "hydraulic transmission oil," - so eventually, many people used another substitute which were also "recommended" by their local oil disturbers to be suitable. Turns out the official transmission oil for these older types, was merely labeled as such, it is actually the same as the engine oil recommended at the time of tractors production - "relabeled." In other words, old inters like an 806, don't use a friction modified hydraulic transmission oil in their transmission, rather they use an unmodified engine oil. I was servicing a 706, despite gasket changes and scrutinising control valves, it was only after a kerosene flush and getting the correct oil did problems go away. It was miraculous, it had barely moved ( oh a really good hydraulic oil must have been used previously ;D ) in the lowest gear it had, back to a working machine in all gears. I still meet a few "skeptics," who despite having a slipping TA themselves, refuse to move back to the proper oil.

Anyhow, you could try these guys below for oil specs but they'd probably want you to buy from them.

The link for hydraulics, sends the user to model / serial / etc query to go any further.

We always recommend 15-40 motor oil, straight 30W (for locations above 32c majority of year) and an ATF for colder locations. We can offer any and all support for this model my friends.

In the future if you have a need for any support material, parts (new, used, rebuilt), service/support, Copeland International is a great source. We can support you antique and wonderful machinery to keep it running. In addition we also supply rebuilt outright, rebuilt exchange as well as repair and return time and material, all transmissions are Dino tested with load so you can be assured you are receiving the right product for your machine.

Here is our website, http://www.copelandintl.com tour of our facility http://youtu.be/kyCpZTohhi8

We specialize in the CRT3000 - CRT3331 CRT 3331 -1 -3 and CRT3531 CRT 3531 -1 -3 CRT3300 CRT3500 CRT5630, CRT5631, CRT5633, CRT 5000, CRT5000 in addition to many others
