Well hello, I was wondering if anybody knows what I could use for coal in my OCCS dio, I've been hunting around lately and the only thing that I think comes close is that black rubber stuff from model shops used for coal on model trains, would this be any good? I once tried crushing up BBQ charcoal as well but couldn't crush it small enough plus it's not as black as coal if that makes any sense
any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Luke - Try Signal Fuels on Whiteley Road in Ripley (Near Anchor army surplus) They do small grade coal for live steam engines - you might have to buy a 25kg bag though

Oh yeah, never thought of getting the real stuff,
but don't fancy getting a 25kg bag, but then again, I might need quite a lot of it for my dio. Thanks Ian
I know the place you mean too, bet the dam stuff ain't cheap though

Up here in Durham weve got plenty spare I can think of a few places I can easily go and dig it from and a few derelict coal bunkers that still have it in, If you can get a hessian sack or a sand bag you can put lumps of coal in there -pulverise it up quite fine with a hammer and then youd need to sort it out into sizes as neccesary- you could sieve or screen it if you have an old collinder

Thats what I did with the charcoal I used! I ran my car over it whilst in the bag first! Then riddled it through the mesh pencil/desk organiser I bought from tesco and it comes out perfect! It's very time consuming though lol
