Cat 988 carry loader !

Post #1 by Mike d550 » Sat Nov 01, 2008 2:24 pm

Was on Ebay a couple of nights ago and saw a cat brochure which at first i thought was a spoof! It was a 988 (pre B series i think) which was called a carry loader, it had a bucket at the front AND BACK !!!!!!! it looked amazing and something which i have never heard of before.

There was only 1 min to go before the item ended and did not get chance to save it, does anyone have any information or photos of this unusual machine?

Regards

Hi Mike, there are various pics in books on the prototype, they also did a 988 with tracks on it.
I can't help you with the pics

Strange loader!
Here is another one of a similar idea, taken from a discussion at Maskinisten about wheel loaders and tractors with dual loaders.

Edit:
Creds to Anton Normark at Maskinisten for the picture.

Thats the one Tim many thanks for posting

I must admit its a strange design and am not sure how well it would work, you would get a stiff neck by the end of a shift from turning round to load the rear bucket!

Does it mention in the brochure how the rear shovel is operated? is there two sets of levers?

Will try and find the photo of the 988 with tracks!!!!!!!

Hey Nicky, These arent chains as such, they were called Beadless tyres and were more like an excavator track pad than the tyre chains we see today.

Came across these couple of 988B's still earning a living today, 50+k hours on each one.....
