Looks like quite a strait example out of a builders merchant's yard:

Perhaps John T might date it a little? The early ones used a Leyland 400 and later on a Perkins 6.354

There used to be quite a few of these knocking around in scrap yards and recycling yards by where I live, sadly all gone now; this one has an unusual air-filter setup :think:

Looking at the pic it looks like L62B /9 short wheel base Leyland 401 engine Clark transmission centrax axles and the colour look like Hoveringhams the cab doors would have the logo on them the exhaust and air cleaner are non standard

Was the short wheel base just an option for tighter maneuverability ?

No that used to be the standard wheel base they extended it when the driver protective cab and ROPS/FOPS cab came into production as they required stronger mountings these where the series 2 machines
