Hello Graham
Its called top and tailing,it speeds up the return working and avoiding time to put the loco on the other end of the train, ie running around. This procedure is very common on ballast trains. On the return trip the leading loco is shut down and the previously trailing dead loco becomes the train loco.
Was that you I past at Cheively on the M4 this morning about 10 30 am.The Walters lowloader was London bound.?
Regards
Martyn
I will phone you the end of the week for a chat
