Rio Tinto Bingham Canyon Utah USA

Post #1 by dpan » Fri Apr 12, 2013 2:32 am

A large slide that has been monitored for a period of time occurred night of April 10, no one injured. No way out of pit as large potion of main haul road gone. There is crusher and conveyers out of pit bottom that were not damaged lost two 2800 and Hitachi as well as some trucks. One shovel operational as well as unknown number of trucks. This video was taken today. An aside, have a family member working at that property so get a bit of insight. http://www.ksl.com/?sid=24748916&nid=148 Not sure how to post a link if allowed. Guess could be copied and pasted.

Just returned from visit to Utah. Don't know if photos will be available for public but many things taking place to get mine back to normal operation. Ten new Komatsu 960 haul trucks are arriving, components of each will be placed on a skid and dragged to a lay down site some where near bottom of pit. The main haul road was taken out by slide, the present access road has upward to 18% grade. A Hitachi 5600 if remember correctly has been skidded into pit and erected. At top on back side, where slide took half an old truck shop, not sure of number but between 20 to 25 remote control D10 and D11's are pushing down away from top to a couple PH 4100's, the intent is to relieve pressure on remaining material. A remote control back hoe has been demoing the old truck shop remains, scrapping as much metal as possible. Area around slide area continues to be monitored but seems to be stable at this time. No fatalities to this point says alot about Rio Tinto's regard toward safety as they progress toward ore removal near bottom of pit.

If Rio Tinto had any sense they would make a documentary on this, not only from a safety point of view, but from a natural history point of view.
