I have only got an extract from a TD6 manual for the steering clutches and it showed the use of the clamp type compressor so that is what I did. I take your point that using the bolts would have been much easier but not having ever tackled a steering clutch before I was reluctant to just screw a long bolt into it not knowing what it may be bearing against. Now that I have dismantled the clutches I can see where the bolts go and so needless to say that is how I shall compress the clutches when it comes to installing them.
Thank you for your concern and suggestions, with hindsight I should have probably have asked first but no harm done and we learn by our mistakes. Incidentally the clamps work but are a bit fiddly to fit and tighten up.
