Fowler lorrys

Post #1 by FOWLER MAN » Sun Oct 03, 2010 12:23 am

Hello,
I suppose you all know by now that I'm a Fowler history nut. :geek: So forgive me if I bore you with some more useless information. :)
Did you know that Fowlers produced lorrys in the 1930s. :?: :?: Here is a photo of a 1934 showmans tractor and of a Fowler 6 wheeler leaving the Leeds Works with a delivery of Fowler tractors probably 4/40s. .

:claphands: Fred Good find

I believe the bottom one is a Marathon. 90 hp 6-cylinder circa 1931

Also built a Warrior Heavy Haulage tractor (is that showmans based on this ?) and a Crusade tipper. Front end looks very similat to some other

McLarens also built a Heavy tractor similar to the top one with Streamer rear wheels and a 5-cylinder McLaren diesel of 95 hp, But with a overtype cab similar to a AEC Matdor.

Fred I should think that wagon in the first pic must be a unique design? Cos I have never seen a truck with a steam traction engine rear wheel before :wtf:
It looks like some kind of weird hybred, all interesting stuff nonetheless.

Hi Dave and Jeremy,
Apparently the showmans tractor in the first photo was a one off.
It had an 80 hp. Freeman Sanders Fowler engine. Probably the same unit as the Fowler 80 crawler??
It had 6 gears and was also equipped with a 500 amp gennerator.

Had no idea Fred, what was the idea behind the large traction wheels on the tractor? Sort of looks left over from steam traction engine. I guess they would have been in competitition with the better known Sammells?
Thanks for posting.

Hello pete and Angus,
I think as you say Pete the big back wheels on that tractor were just a throw-back to the steam days.
That is a Gyrotiller Angus , looks like the smallest of them based on the 30 hp. 3-30 crawler.
Picture below.

Those large rear wheels must have meant some pretty serious reduction gearing - and would there have been a diff?

Hi Angus,
The short answer is I don't know. :?
Reduction gearing Yes.
I suppose there must have been a diff or the thing would have ploughed straight on in spite of where the front wheels wanted it to go.
