Yes Andy the Detroit Diesels are two stroke engines and just like Foden and Commer TS3 two strokes they sound fantasic. :D Looks like the GMC truck he was driving had A fuller nine gearbox too, only difference was you couldn't hear the gearbox scream in fourth gear because the engine was wailing like a banshee
There are several such similar good clips on there of Yankie trucks with different engines in em, there's also a clip of a guy loading a tipper with an old Poclain HC300 that was also Detroit powered too sounds great.

I once had the good fortune to bobtail a Bedford TM with a Detroit and a blown exhaust from Newark to Cambridge. I was king of the A1 that Monday morning 8-) You just can't beat the sound of a 2 stroke.

Hi Pete,
That Foden 2 stroke sounds great, my mate had good service out of one in a Foden dump truck.
I had a bit to do with the Commer TS3 two stroke in the early 60's. They were noisy, but quiet enough in the cab. Plenty of power but no engine brakeing. The engine didnt hold you back much but the Clayton Dewandre air brakes were brilliant for the time.
Rootes got 90 h.p. out of 3.25 litres when conventional engines needed over twice the cappacity to produce that sort of power.
The TS4 engine which was abbandoned when Chrysler took over would have been a hell of a good unit.
Heres a photo of two TS3 Commers run by ICI from a local factory at Merthyr Tydfil.
