We used to call them Whining Winnies becasuse the transmission noise on motorways was incredible.
I always assumed there was some sort of resonant mismatch that caused the howling niose - perhaps there were other issues.

In the bit I read on Google the hub reduction gears was were the noise came from they looked the part but like so many motor vechiles from that time they seem to come standard from the factory with rust and it would seem almost all brands on all country's weather it was managments been been tight or what I dont know but rust is no were near as bad today

Paul you'd be very hard pressed to find a T45 around these days and yes the Scammell badged versions were basically the same truck they all fell within what was the old BL (British Leyland) badge era; sadly many great names lost now such as; AEC, Albion, Guy, Scammell and Leyland all gone now.
along with the rest of true British truck making.

Nice finds there Pete
but they are very rare these days with the possible exception of the army version; sadly I noticed today as I took a trip out the last of the old ERF's appear to be bowing out now I only saw four and the odd Foden.
