JCB's compaction division, JCB Vibromax, has launched three new double-drum rollers
At the heavy end the VMT860 replaces the VMT850 and is now powered by JCB Dieselmax engine. It comes with duel operating modes: low frequency and high amplitude for large asphalt or soil applications and optimised amplitude on high frequency for standard asphalt jobs.
The unit weighs in at 9.25t with a full ROPS/FOPS cab (or 8.75t with a ROPS frame) and has electrically-controlled hydrostatic direct drive to the 1,675mm wide drums while the 240lit fuel and 1,070 lit water tanks mean the machine can work a shift without refilling. Vibration comes from a single-piece shaft with overturning weights and the operator can select vibration on the front, rear or both drums while the driver's located is vibration isolated.
In the walk-behind range the new 700kg operating weight/650mm wide VMD70 replaces both the VMD62 and VMD80 rollers while the VMD100 (942kg) is a direct replacement for the 750mm wide VMD120. The redesign sees the Hatz diesel engine moved from the centre of the machine to the front and the water tank relocated to the rear to give equal weight distribution between the two drums.
Both rollers gain independent hydrostatic drive motors mounted within each drum which allows the rollers to run alongside the kerb and as well as boosting travel speed (now 0-6.24km/h) and improving gradeability from 35% to 40%.
An increase in nominal vibration amplitude to 0.49mm on the VMD70 and 0.51mm on the VMD100, and higher exciter frequency (up to 60Hz from 55Hz) improves compaction. The result is that the VMD70 has an operating linear load of 5.6kg/cm and the heavier VMD100 produces 6.3kg/cm.
