International 100B lack of forward drive + where to get service manual?

Post #1 by Ingo » Mon Jun 11, 2012 12:32 pm

Hi guys,
I am totally new here and I like to say "HELLO" to ALL!!!

Well and the first question :-)

I just bought a 100B and the guy told me he done a lot of work to it!

The problem I am facing is the lack of forward power.
It drives 100% in reverse but the Drott does not move forward!

If I lift the machine up (with bucket and ripper) the track are moving forward but not full power and as soon the track hits the ground
they stop!
The previous owner told me he replaced and upgraded the drive gears he also serviced the steer clutches!
There is new Trans oil in it and it is not milky !

I was working with the machine for about an hr and the forward drive suddenly stopped after 5min it was moving again and not it stopped
again!

Any suggestions? Did someone had a similar problem?

I am also after a operating and workshop manual for the 100b ,does anyone know a place to get it?
Is there a similar model manual I could use?

Any help is much appreciated!

I have a manual but lent it out, must get it returned :dizzy: check strainer and shift linkage.Strainer under cab floor plate.Check oil level. With you getting good backward power it would suggest power shift control direction selector fault.
Martyn
PS bleed trans system on the cooler ,remove grill, you will see a plug on the oil cooler.

go on e-bay and search for tractor and machinery manuels you will find one there.good luck.sounds like a clutch pack or selector problem, talk to any i.h. tractor dealer.just wander into the workshop and ask one of fitters.

Thank for the Info Martyn,

I will start to bleed the trans. As I am totally new and dont know much about these 100b I am not sure where which part sits.(would be easier with an manual)
If it is a shift control direction selector fault as you mentioned , do you think it is a major repair? How can I test this?

Jack also thanks to you , I tried to find a 100b manual but nothing available or could I use a manual from a different modell?
Do you think it is the clutch pack as it packs 100% in reverse , or is the forward clutch a seperate system?

Sorry for all this stupid questions.

If someone could help me out with a manual copy , that would be great!

All help very welcome!

I will ask for my manual back, just realised its been 28 years since I stripped down one of those machines .Where has the time gone ????
Your problem seems to be pretty common with those machines, those faults are usually caused by low oil leved, wrong oil type, blocked strainer, pick up pipe drawing air.But to get good drive in reverse, only does point to a selector problem. What about high and low gear ? is it the same ?
I will get my book back and have a read through and scan the fault page.I am working nights this week so will not have much time.

Thanks Martyn,
It is very much appreciated
Oil level is spot on in run and stop ,
The oil type could be another factor as the previous owner did not remember what he used, what is the correct oil for the trans?

The high and Low gear are the same reverse fin and forward weak as p.... :o

Another stupid question ,there is the High Low Gear and N , is it correct that the tracks are running in N?
Thanks Mate

This could be a result of the forward clutch pack being worn out, after all its the forward pack that does all of the hard work.
All you need to check the pack is a torch!
Put the machine in high range and make sure that the brakes are well locked on,remove the dipstick and start the engine, now shine the torch down the dipstick tube and you will see the oil being churned up by the rotating gears.
Now select either forward or reverse and as the clutch pack engages the oil in the gearbox should stop churning as all the gears should be stationary.
The above test should be carried out at maximum engine revs.
This obviously is only a quick test that does'nt need any tools or gauges that we used to use when I worked at Saville Tractors many years ago.
From memory the clutch pack pressure was 165PSI
torque converter pressure70---90PSI
lube pressure20-----30PSI
Hope this info is helpful
Peter

Thinking back a few years ago,had a similar problem with a powershift MF 50B.Those machines had a forward and reverse pedal, the one we had lost its forward drive and that turned out to be a clutch pack.Peter's right, its logical that most of the work is done in forward so greater wear of the clutch pack takes place. But the 50B forward drive failed and was not able to regain any drive in forward.
But you say you regained drive in forward after a while.

Hi Martyn and Peter,

Thanks again for all your effort.
I will check the clutch problem today or tomorrow!
Do you think it is a expensive fix?
As I am in Australia I am not sure where to get spares for it!

Thanks again

Hi Peter,

I just checked the clutch and yes you are right in high gear and max revs in forward the oil is still churning up.In reverse it stopped churning. :arrrrgh:
Does it mean I have to replace the forward clutch packs?
Is there anybody in Australia for spare parts help or can they just put new clutch pads on ?
