Graham,
Thanks for all the info, it is appreciated.
I looked at that video on you tube you sent me a link too, very informative thanks for that.
If I buy two of the tap fittings on e-bay will I need any other fittings or should they fit in to the rams tails and hoses with no extra fittings needed ?
Thanks
Mark

Re: JCB 3CX Help
to be honest mate i am not sure what size they are selling as they do not give the info , before buying taps and bits it may pay to find if someone local can test the ram ,on or off the machine ,as i would guess the cost of taps and fittings would be more than a seal kit
and you may never use them again
if it were me , i would put a seal kit on it and go from there
cheers graham

Thanks Graham,
To be honest that is what I am going to do,I orderd the seal kit and have it already so will give it a go myself,I have found a local company who will do the ram anyway so I have nothing to lose.
Thanks for all the info,I will let you know how I get on with it.

Re: JCB 3CX Help
to test the boom ram just rest the bucket on the ground release the pressure on the ram like you said blank the ram off with blanking plugs, blank the hoses off, should be 1/2 bsp fittings on to the ram start the machine up and raise the whole thing up on the legs this should raise the boom up with it to see if it drops, when you have found out if the boom drops lower back down on the legs and undo the blanking caps slowly to release any pressure still in the lines or ram if the boom drops it's the ram seals if not it's in the valve block.

Hi Phil,
Thanks a lot for that info,I will pick up some caps and give that a go.
I was dreading taking the ram out doing the seals and putting back with it still lowering.

Re: JCB 3CX Help
Hi,
Done the seals on the slew rams today and no leaking of oil anymore.
Was fairly straight forward to do,the biggest problem was getting the metal tube pots back on with the new seals in place,I put a small amount of grease on the new rubber seals and used a large rubber mallet to drive.
Just need to deal with the lowering of the boom ram,I may have a go of this tomorrow.
Once again thank you all for your advice.

Re: JCB 3CX Help
Hi,
I wonder if any of you chaps can help me.
I have slight mechanical knowledge but no nothing about these machines.
I purchased a 3CX black cab 1982+ not sure of the exact year.
When I select the forward and reverse lever it hesitates to move forward sometimes but always goes backwards.
I had this problem last year when the oil cooler radiator split and I lost all the oil,I repaired the rad and put some oil in it it would not move forward so put a bit more oil in and was okay and worked backwards and forwards.
The machines been laid up over winter put a bit of oil in it and the level was well above the line on the long spring like transmission dipstick high level.
But is still hesitating to move forward
I am hoping not a serious problem, any advice/info would be most welcome.
Many Thanks
Mark

Re: JCB 3CX Help
Check the dump pedal spool is not too far out when the pedal is up, you should be able to push the spool in about 25thou if there is any more movement in it you will loose forward drive the same as when it's low on oil, most of the problems with these boxes are they always loose forward first, also check the oil to see if it smells burnt as the clutch packs can burn out very quickly.

Re: JCB 3CX Help
Hi Mark.Had you the engine running when dipping the oil? If not,the oil runs back from the higher oil cooler until it finds its own level, which will give a higher reading on the dipstick than what it reads with the engine going. You'll only get the correct reading with the engine running.
