I also read about a guy using Loctite instant gasket as a fix too.
Has anyone had experience with these techniques as a cheap fix, or is a repack the only way?

Would not bother doing that. looks a bit messy A quick fix on chevron seals would be to remove the seal, get new chevron seals and cut them at an angle to split them so they will fit on the rod without removing the whole assembly.If there are two or three, stager the cuts as if you were fitting piston rings and refit gland cap.Never had one fail.

yep this is how I would do but thought you blokes might say Im a bit rough
by the time you pull it all apart whack all that snot into it what a mess and even the bloke doing the job says so to me you have got it apart that far the seal is out not much further to go and you have a new seal
