Governor repair help please

Post #1 by Julian » Mon Apr 09, 2012 8:24 pm

The governor on the Ruston CSB engine on my 1941 Aveling DX8 motor roller is a bit past its sell date and the engine is a little reluctant to idle reliably, below are three pictures, the first two just show the general arrangement of the thing and the last is a close up of the wear (similar in 4 other places). The bob weights pivot on the shafts, but the shafts have been moving in the cast main body which is now considerably worn (which they shouldn't as they are theoretically held solid by little taper cotter pins)

Any ideas how best to make them tight in the main body again? all I can think of is to run the MIG welder over them, this would probably work but is a little drastic.

Perhaps build up with weld and remachine.Or perhaps rebush. Not a lot to play with there. It would depend on the equipment you have available to carry out this task.

Hello Julian,
Just a thought, there seems to be plenty of meat on those eyes, could they be bored and bushed :?: :?:

Taking a quick look here I would of gone for Fred's idea of boring and bushing which would be a better repair than welding as an engine governor is very sensitive component. I would also see if there were any better second hand parts available and would consider contacting a pump repair specialist after all the worst they can say is no?

If the pin is not worn too bad I would rebush . At least it would take up the slop.Weld may distort it.

Thanks chaps, it looks like the best solution is going to be to make up some bushes for it. It will be a fair amount of work as the body will need to be drilled and reamered out fairly accurately so that the bushes are a nice press fit.

I have a vertical mill and lathe so I can do the work.
