I recently ditched the engine oil as I don't know how long it's been in there. I bought plently of oil as I wasn't initially sure what the capacity is, however, as it's got the alu sump it should hold around 2.4 gallons. I put in just under 2.0 gallons and the oil level is well over the max mark on the dipstick (about 12mm above )
Could I have the wrong dipstick? I'm not sure what to trust, an overfilled engine isn't good, neither is underfilled.
Are there any tips or advice you good people can offer me? I'm not sure if to drain some off or not.
Thanks in advance.

Always best to first check the manual to see what the correct capacity is and then to use a measured pouring jug to fill the engine with the correct quantity, don't forget that if you have changed to oil filter as well then you need to let the engine idle for a few minutes to let the oil fill the new filter.
Once the filter is full let the engine settle and recheck the level is correct, I know this may sound daft but also check that the machine is in level ground, the dipstick should give the correct reading if you have followed the above, if not simply remark it as required.

One last thing that I forget to mention here was that you should also check that there is no oil leaking to the engine from another part of the machine, be it diesel or ATF or hydraulic oil, it can happen and there is a thread on here somewhere as I recall where a fellow CMN member had that problem.

There are around 4 or 5 different dipsticks for the Leyland BMC so you may have the wrong one.

Re: JCB 3C2 - Engine oil capacity/level
Thanks for the replies fellas, I'll do some investigations.
The all important question...........
How can I determine if I have the right dipstick for my 4/98 engine?
Thanks,
Yozza

It all depends on the length of your stack. The 4/98 and 38TD engine went into so many different vehicles hence the need for all the different dipsticks.

Once you have measured the specific recommended quantity of oil in your engine then see where the level is on the dipstick; simply remark your dipstick that would be one very easy solution, unless you want to go through part numbers and try getting the correct one?

Re: JCB 3C2 - Engine oil capacity/level
If any of you could easily put your hands on the correct part number I'd be grateful
What numbers do you need from me?
JCB Machine S/N - 3c 114951
Tractor S/N - 384B 211803
Engine S/N - 380
I suppose engine number too?
Thanks,
Yozza

Not necessarily. Oil & coolant are similar in that the capacity listed in the manual is for a 'dry' fill. If you are changing oil (or coolant) you never get to the capacity quoted as there's always oil still lurking in the galleries etc.
