Bought my first JCB today

Post #1 by bobby-gg » Sun Nov 29, 2009 8:10 pm

Hi guys, I found this site the other day whilst looking for info on JCB’s as I wasn’t sure what I’d just found.

I’ve just been looking around for a machine with a backhoe on, something that needs a little tlc, etc to go with the family’s Wetherill loading shovel.

I found these two machine in a local yard last weekend, and after inspection I preferred the look of the older one, 3C mk II registered in 1968, which seamed to be of ‘heavier’ duty than the one sitting next to which I think is a 3C mk III. Both of them have the 3.8 bmc engine in, and this one fired straight up no problem.

Anyway, the deal was done and just this morning took delivery of my new toy, the plan is to sort out the bits that need doing, front axle pivot is the first item on the check list and full electric’s as I would like to register for the road again.

Enjoy the photo’s.

Hi Rob.Great picturesof the JCBs but would say the "oldest one" is in fact the newer one (1968=F registered.-originally issued by Glasgow licensing authority, probably to Scot JCB,the selling dealer). The other JCB 3C in the pics is the older by about 2/3 years at a guess.Always interested in old pics, keep all updated on the restoration !

Perhaps Steelfab can update further history on this machine if you know the serial number ?

Ah, that show's you what I know then.

I was just going off the cab's since the other one has what I'd thought was a mk III cab.

I first thought that the one I'd bought was a 2D or a 3 with the sloping windscreen

Yup the F Reg is a 3C Mk2 and the other is a really cracker 3C Mk 1. I would have loved it in my yard. It would ease my concsience. Once burnt the jack legs of one of these Mk 1's and wheeled it into a roll on roll off skip/ bin.

Thanks steelfab, I took pictures of the only plate I've found so far, on the left hand chassis rail, and I'll post them tonight, can't find the plate inside the cab.

Also, if I have time to get back to the yard I got it from would you like the details of the other one?, it's not for sale, but would be interesting to see what it is exactly.

Hi rob, is that kenny forresters yard ? If it is you did well, he had a couple of jcbs about 15 years ago but would not sell them. I'm 10 mins away from you, if fancy you can call over and have a look at my collection of JCB's. Also I have a few things that will help you along the way when you start your project ! Cheers john
