JCB 304

Post #1 by Martyn Henley » Tue Oct 28, 2008 1:16 am

In 1974 jcb started work on replacing the 3cmk2, this was one idea that they worked on ..the JCB 304.

The prototype was made in 1975, but for some reason it never went into production, instead JCB went on to improve on the 3Cmk2 and made it the 3C mk3

But JCB did not stop there as they were losing ground to the Case 580F so project 200 was started ..this was their first attempt..

But they ended up with this ... the project 200 .. that went on to become the 3CX

304 looked a bit like a nasher, perhaps thats why they dropped it :D

Parallel linkage on a MK 111 power train would have been good although they did have it on some. Looks like a twin door cab in the 2nd picture.

The last picture looks close to the finished article.

Thanks

Here's another couple of shots of that pre 3CX machine - I spied it in around 1990 when at the JCB factory although it was in a sorry state when i saw it in the flesh :insomnia:

Hadn't seen the 304 before

I belive there was picture of it on a farm, looking a bit sad, i belive it was in an edition of classic plant mag a couple of years ago now Col, i cant find the edition, maybe some one else might know ?
The cab from a project 200 was also shown in a couple of editions of classic plant, on a JCB 2D.

Revisting this thread, it has occurred to me that it is the now demolished JCB Heavy Products (formerly Bamford's) works in the photo.
