I notice a few variations in the 4s. Single crowd ram and mudguard or fender shape.

Blimy, guess what I have just dug out of my workshop manual mountain, a Spare parts book plus a maintenance and instruction manual for a JCB 4, 1 page in it talks about a 25hr & 75hr free service, the books are issue No1 date october 1960, I have also the ram nut spanner, I even have the big socket that never gets used on the clamp bolts on the later model JCB's, I also have a good pile of JCB manuals for wheels and track machines, willing to swap for Beer.

I found an old JCB today, in deepest east sussex... was told about this machine a couple of years ago and after a lot of looking i failed to see her, untill today. and there in a little sort of builders yard at the foot of a wooded bank was this ... Bills 1964 jcb 4C

Amazingly Bill bought this machine back in 1964 from Ernst Doe of Essex and has it since then.. the machine still works but sadly some bits have rotted away, but for me it was enough to get vital measurements for a forth coming project, Bill is going to look for pics that has been taken over the years since Bill bought the machine.
