Mine is a later model, but I've just had mine straightened. The workshop the trued it up was pretty brutal and left a few witness scars on the rod surface. I was able to take out the worst by tapping with a hammer, so I'm quite confident the rod is not hardened.

I used some liquid 2 pack resin in some pitting on my 814S bucket ram. It seems to have held.

It's impressive how well that stuff works.
The low spots weren't too bad, but the high spots were a bit sharp. I needed to "soften" the edges.

I found a fine oil Stone good on slightly raised marks.
Gland seals can be quite forgiving. The old Weatherill shovel, that I still have, stood unused for several years. I am not sure if the rods were ever chromed. I am going back to late 70s when it was 25 years old. When I revived it the glands soon tore out. I had a pig of job splitting the rams (never could get the cylinder off). I used various grades of emery on an old orbital sander. Dad was dubious, but the rams went back with new seals and worked quite hard for years loading hay and straw.

dropped it off to have the eye cut off and a 1/2 alignment dowel fitted to the eye and rod so the eye and rod are aligned during welding.

Cylinder eye was cut off with a lathe and rewelded after packaging was changed out. shop said that is how they are made with dowels to center the eye. Looks like a clean job....time for installation.
