JCB 3c MK2

Post #1 by mechman » Sun Feb 06, 2022 12:20 pm

Hi all.
Has anyone on the forum replaced the outer rear axle seals on a JCB 3c MK2? What category (job wise) would it come under? Big, Huge, Massive. :dizzy:
Norm.

Norm I am guessing the job will be the same as the Leyland tractor so if no one able to help here then the Farming Forum has a strong classic section or the Leyland /Nuffield club forum.

Norm, did you manage to get any feedback about the difficulty of this job? Mine's got an oil leak on the rear axle. I need to clean it to identify exactly where it's coming from.

One other question, is the oil level in the rear differential and axle maintained by the filling point (accessed via the cab floor) on top of the gearbox? In other words, do the gearbox, rear differential and rear axle share the same oil? Cheers

All the one oil. You can go with a Super Universal 10w/30 or some manuals say to use 80 or 90 gear oil.

Mike.
Haven't had a go at that rear oil seal yet, but looking at a manual it's looking like the axle housing has to come off to get at the nut that holds the half shaft in. Bit of graft involved there.
Norm.

Haven't done a JCB axle seal but have done a couple of Ford tractors and it took 2 of us to do it. Used an engine crane to remove the rear trumpet, the nut on the half shaft is seriously tight and as i didn't have a 1" drive high torque air wrench we bolted the wheel back on to the axle with it still on the crane and my mate held onto the wheel with it rolled up to the wall while i had a 3/4" drive socket, t bar and a scaffold pole to undo it. It wasn't too bad a job, the worst bit was the brakes in the axle but I don't think you have that problem on the JCB. At least with the JCB you have a built in jack so that's one less thing to worry about!

Black smoke don't mean it's broke, keep it flat out like a badger on a bypass

Cheers Norm, John, agrimax,
Sounds abit of a tester, more a winter job in case it takes longer than expected. Yes I can imagine why it would be a 2 man job. Useful info for future planning anyhow.
I'll keep her topped up with oil and monitor the leak. There's plenty of other stuff I can get on with in the meantime.
