Thats good news that some grease cured the problem, Those rack and pinion slew set ups are tried and tested, but nearly everyone forgets to drain the slew box and put fresh oil in, I always change mine the mixture of sludge that comes out is when ever you drain them is horrendous. i recently got myself a battery operated grease gun what a great piece of kit it makes greasing up a machine such an easy job

I really hate cracking open the drain on my 3CX slew-box to 'drain off the condensate' because invariably there's no condensate, just emulsion! It just reminds me that I have one really big job that needs doing and it's one that's undoubtedly going to be expensive!

No emulsion in mine - just water

Our old MK 111 was lubricated by leaking slew pots. Always worked.

My worry is that with as there is oil that escapes out between the king post and the slew box when it's being worked hard, it means that dirt can be getting in and making a lovely grinding paste

That's easy to fix - just over fill it!! It'll leak somewhere.
