Hi guys
Could someone please tell me the correct orientation of a main bearing cap?
I cant remember which way it came off and it appears it will go on either way but im pretty sure it needs to go on the same way it came off. If i put it on one way, both of the little sticky-out bits on the bearing shell will be on the same side but not lined up. If i put it on the other way the sticky-out bits will be on opposite sides, diagonally opposite. Thats all ive got to go on.

No arrow cast into the top of the cap?

And the orientation on the other caps of the numbers?

Re: Main bearing cap orientation
I can't see any other numbers. Main bearing 1 and 5 are obscured by the sides of the block, bearing 2 and 3 dont appear to have numbers. I was hoping someone could tell me if the bearing pegs (sticky-out bits) should be on the same side or diagonally opposite?

While I have not worked on one of these engines, as a general rule of thumb the locking tabs should face each other on the same side, and the cap number should be camshaft side, you could always carefully drop another one out just to ensure that you have things the right way around. Make sure they are tightened to the correct torque.

Thanks Jeremy
I found more numbers pressed into the block after I scraped off the old sump gasket, they are all camshaft-side too so that makes sense.

Yes, rule of thumb for all British engines. The bearing locating nibs in the block, caps and in the con rods and caps all go to the camshaft side.
