my 1989 Grey Cab 3CX is having serious trouble when in 4WD under load. There are ominous noises coming from the 2/4 wheel drive unit on the front of the gearbox. Sometimes 4WD will operate ok, other times there is just dreadfull crunching. Clearly something pretty grim.
Can anyone shed any light on how this unit operates, what might go wrong, and how I might approach repair.

Here's a picture of what's in there...
Haven't been in one before but I'd guess if you remove the output flange(19),you should be able to then remove the cover(12) and see what's damaged/worn. I'd guess that a bearing has collapsed or gear (5) or shaft(9) is damaged.
