Have you tried crossing the solenoid contacts yourself? If it starts ok,you've a problem with the switches or wiring (volt drop between key switch and solenoid energising terminal most likely). If it doesn't turn the engine over, the starter likely has a high internal resistance and needs repaired or replaced.(The starter may be ok on the bench but that's because it's not under load).
Why not fit the starter of the Nuffield to the JCB and see what happens?

Re: JCB 3d starter motor
Hi agrimax
Why didn't I think of that !
My Nuffield 4/65 should have the same starter motor . The one on the JCB is a Lucas m 50 .
Not using the Nuffield too much at the moment just for topping a few acres so I could temporarily borrow the starter from that at least it would eliminate or confirm wiring or starter faults .
I'll have a look on Saturday .
Cheers Chris

Re: JCB 3d starter motor
Hi all
Thank you all for your help and comments regarding my starter motor problem .
JCB is now starting .
Did the tests as outlined and confirmed that in tech terms the starter motor was knackered !
Swapped the starter motor from my Nuffield 4/65 ( thanks agrimax ) and she fired straight up .
5 minutes later ran out of diesel ! Even though fuel gauge was showing quarter of a tank obviously not to be trusted .
No problem at least it's running can't say the same about the poor old Nuffield though .
I am going to order a new starter tomorrow now problem is identified .
Thanks once again for the advice .
Regards Chris
