Couldn't go into the full codes or numbers but the first Perkins fitted to the 3CX was the A4.236 in 1982. The type code began with LD.The turboed 4.236 version a few years later began with LJ. Late Grey cabs went to the 1000 series engines...beginning with AA for the 1004-4 but there's quite a few other start codes for the 1000 series. Starting with AA and running through to AQ. There was the 1004-4 and 4T and 40T.
Maybe this will be of interest...

Re: Jcb 3cx Perkins engines codes
I've somewhat wondered about this too. At least as much as it relates to my 3CX.
I've got an AB block and following the link above, it's a UK build that left the factory in '96.
The manual says it (the 3CX) should have a 4.236T while the Perkins doc above says an AB is a Phaser 1004-4T
Are these different names for the same engine?

That's definately a 1000 series engine. Totally different engine to the 4236 series. Last of the Project 7(grey cab) and Project 8 and onwards used the 1000 series.I'd expect yours to be a Project 8 if it's a '96 build.Think the P12 came in '97. They then went on to the crappy 1100 series engines in '04 and about a year later, started fitting the JCB 444 engine.

Thanks for that - greatly appreciated.
It also explains why when I ordered a seal (o-ring) for the back of the waterpump, a paper gasket turned up!
I've been told it's a P8, but I'm not sure how to confirm that.
